Welcome to the Website of Breast Surgeon Mr Richard Johnson

Consultant Oncoplastic, Reconstructive and Cosmetic Breast Surgeon

MB.ChB (Manc) BSc (Hons) FRCS (Sub specialty Breast Surgery) Qualified in 1997

Richard is a well trained Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon who specialises in reconstruction after breast cancer surgery. He was awarded a national breast fellowship towards the end of his postgraduate training (only 9 are available in the UK). Richard also has an interest in Cosmetic Breast Surgery including breast augmentation, breast uplift, breast reduction and challenging cosmetic revision procedures.   Richard’s aim is to provide a high quality, comprehensive Breast service where the patient is very much involved in the decision making process.

After completing a science degree in molecular biology, Richard read medicine at Manchester University where he qualified in 1997. Richard states:

“My intention from an early stage was to pursue a career in Breast Surgery. I took basic and higher surgical training in the North West and was trained to a high standard in all aspects of breast surgery, in particular breast cancer management.”

“My training focused on breast implant reconstruction, latissimus dorsi reconstruction (using muscle from the back) as well as breast augmentation, reduction and breast uplifts. I also became familiar with new techniques e.g. fat transfer to the breast (for defects after lumpectomy) and the use of acellular dermal matrix e.g.strattice (aids cosmetic appearance of implant based reconstruction).”

Richard is currently a Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon in the Nightingale Breast and Genesis Prevention Centre at the University Hospital of South Manchester NHS Trust in Wythenshawe. This is the largest breast screening unit in the UK and treats approximately 750 cancers per year and is a recognised referral centre for complex breast reconstruction surgery.

Training
Richard is committed to helping trainee Surgeons succeed in practice. The training needs of today’s Surgeons are somewhat different than they were 20 years ago. Surgical techniques change and treatment of disease changes.

However, training time has shortened and in order to equip the next generation of Surgeons with the necessary quality skills there will have to be a huge effort by Trainers to deliver competent surgeons fit for practice. Richard is a national expert in implant based breast surgery both in the reconstruction and aesthetic disciplines. He has and continues to educate Surgical colleagues nationally and internationally on the use of dermal matrix assissted Breast reconstruction. He has co-authored UK guidelines in implant based reconstruction. The Nightingale Breast unit is a national training centre for the surgical management of Breast Cancer and is responsible for training Surgeons to a very high standard

Testimonials

I’d wanted implants for years and through knowing lots of people in my local area of Macclesfield, I’ve seen (and heard about) the best and the worst operations. In December 2011 I made an appointment to go and see Mr Richard Johnson. He’d recently operated on a friend of mine and she was delighted with the results and I decided that I wanted him to operate on mine as well. When we met, Richard explained the procedure to me and told me that Spire Regency uses Nagor implants which are of the highest quality. The result is amazing and my breasts are exactly as I hoped they would be. I don’t have to wear a bra anymore, which is great, but my breasts don’t feel hard or unnatural, just firm and healthy. Julie

Breast Enlargement Patient

I’ve lived with large breasts since I was 13, the situation had got worse as I got older. I was suffering with back ache and pain in my shoulders, and when I’d take off my bra at night there were deep grooves imprinted in the skin where the straps had been digging in. I had to be strapped up so tightly and securely it left me feeling very tender and sore. Meeting Richard was the turning point, as he was so understanding – he knew exactly what I was getting at. He wasn’t judgmental or condescending – how lovely he was as a person, not just his expertise as a surgeon, was what made me go for it in the end. Having the breast reduction operation is the best decision I’ve ever made, I’m absolutely thrilled with the results. Claire

Breast enlargement: Claire’s story

Keeping fit is important to Claire Standen who spends up to six sessions a week in the gym along with running, trampolining and taking part in Latin dancing. However, she found that as her body has gained muscle and toned up, the exercise was causing her bust to shrink.
